Celebrity Remodel

Amanda Pays & Corbin Bernsen

Who are they?

Amanda Pays is an actress known for her role as Theora Jones in the Max Headroom TV show. See her filmography on the Internet Movie Database. She is also a talented designer who hosted Breathing Room on the Fine Living Channel. Plus, she has designed a whole line of contemporary furniture for Directions. And most importantly, she is the mother of four boys and the wife of actor Corbin Bernsen

Corbin Bernsen is a very hard-working actor known for his starring role in the L.A. Law television series. He plays John Durant on General Hospital, was recently on Boston Legal, taped several episodes of Psyche, and directed and starred in the Car Pool Guy movie. See Corbin’s filmography.

What were their remodeling hopes?

Amanda and Corbin are what I would call “serial remodelers.” They love to buy houses, fix them up and then move! They’ve done this more than 10 times! With this house, the couple loved the large 1-acre lot and the layout of the house. But it needed freshening up.

What happened?

In a period of a few weeks, the couple had the place totally painted and carpeted with sisal carpeting throughout. Amanda believes in choosing just a few colors and materials and then repeating them through the house. She also put wood blinds throughout the house, as well as all new hardware on doors and cabinets.
The galley kitchen needed the most work, but the couple thought they would want to eventually add a large kitchen. So it wouldn’t make much sense to put in a new maple and granite kitchen that would get torn out. So they did something very clever, which was to totally gut the old kitchen, and then build it up again with wood and stainless pieces from Ikea and other stores. The resulting kitchen is so simple and fresh and elegant.

The other element that make the house special is the art collection. One of the couple’s favorite treats when moving into a new house is to send the kids off for the night, break open a bottle of wine, and decide which painting or artwork should go where. They keep some artworks in storage, so it’s refreshing to rotate them in and out, to see them after a period of time and appreciate them anew. In fact, the couple used some of their artwork in the movie Car Pool Guy, along with some furniture pieces from Amanda’s line.
